Warm Weather Issues In Roofing

Because roofs protect the home from all elements, they can withstand damage and abuse. We tend to think about the storm damage and heavy rain that Florida can cause when we think of common causes for roofing damage. The warm Florida sun is an additional factor most people overlook. Your roof and materials can be damaged by the sun’s constant, intense heat. Sun damage can cause everything from humidity to damage to your shingles and UV rays that curl them.

Curled and warped Shingles

Roofs made from shingles can take a beating from the sun. Older shingle materials were not designed to offer the same level of UV resistance as newer materials. The sun can damage shingles by causing them to warp or get bent. This is not only unsightly, but also a potential leak risk. Water can enter your roofing system through weak spots on shingles.

Humidity

Florida is known for its constant humidity. Even in the cooler months, humidity levels remain high. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor and moisture in the air. The higher the humidity, the greater the potential for roofing system damage. Humidity can seep through roofing materials and supports, causing deterioration and weakness over time.

Roofers face unique challenges when installing their roofing system. Modern roofing materials are constantly improving to improve their resistance to heat and humidity.
