Ask the Remodeler: What is causing the hardwood flooring to separate?

Q. My hardwood flooring have been down for about 20 years. This previous summer months we experienced mold and mildew less than the dwelling. We experienced a firm occur spray the floor joists and replace the insulation. They closed off the vents. We had new ductwork finished. They told us what kind of dehumidifier to invest in and to depart it on all the time. We have. Could any of the get the job done we experienced completed have brought on the flooring to different? In a single spot there is a 1-inch gap! Thank you in progress for your ideas.

J.B.

A. I would say that the dehumidifier is producing the flooring to dry out, which would generate gaps. This seems like a tricky just one: You want to continue to keep the crawl room less than the ground dry more than enough to protect against mould, but not so dry that the wooden floor dries out much too considerably. My first thought is that the dehumidifier ought to be hooked up to a humidistat, and my 2nd is that working a dehumidifier all the time looks extreme. A humidistat will control the amount of dry air/humidity and maintain factors in equilibrium. A consultation with an HVAC business would help.

Q. The wooden siding on my 60-calendar year-old dwelling is in great form for the most component, so I was cheered by your new remark that wood tends to make a “good seal.” (”Inquire the Remodeler: April showers loom. Assist your gutters do their task,” Address, March 20). You also reported blown-in cellulose insulation would do a ton toward electricity efficiency. I’ve been thinking about this, but you were responding to a author concerned that the inside lath walls could buckle for the duration of the insulating course of action. Ought to I stress about these a probability? And how disruptive would the procedure be otherwise? Would I have to have to replace parts of clapboard, for example?

M.J., Lowell

A. A couple of issues here: A property that is only 60 yrs aged should really have some insulation in the partitions, despite the fact that it is probable old and very little like today’s merchandise. It’s also hard to say how much has settled and irrespective of whether there are voids in the walls and ceilings. The best way to start off, as I have described to many viewers, is with a professional power audit from Mass Conserve or one more service service provider. These are not high-priced and will give you the advice you need as to where you could require insulation. A 60-12 months-old home will not have lath and plaster partitions it will be wallboard or maybe wire lath, both of which maintain up properly when insulation is blown in. A skilled insulator will be able to get rid of and reinstall two rows of clapboards per ground to insulate as necessary from the outside.
